(Paris) The G7 leaders have reached an agreement “on the disbursement of 50 billion” dollars for Ukraine via the use of frozen Russian assets, the French presidency announced Wednesday evening, specifying that this disbursement would take place “before the end of 2024”.

“There is an agreement. As always at the G7, the leaders make a decision and the technicians then do their work to put it into shape” to ensure that it is “in accordance with the law”, “with the rules of public finances” or even “with financial capacities from each other,” the same source explained.

“There will be unanimity at the G7 when it comes to working to use these frozen assets to help Ukraine rebuild,” House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said earlier. -White.

“It is initially an American initiative,” underlined the Élysée. “This loan is intended to be repaid with the proceeds of frozen Russian assets,” it was explained.

“But if for some reason Russian assets are unfrozen or the income from Russian assets no longer produces what is needed to finance the loan, then the question arises of burden sharing,” he said. -we added.  

“We have established the principles of this distribution and now the technicians must agree on the contract which will ultimately be signed”, also specified the Élysée, deeming this agreement “completely significant”.

President Emmanuel Macron is due to arrive in Italy on Thursday morning to participate in the G7 Summit.

He will also have bilateral talks on Friday with Pope Francis and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

On Saturday, he will travel to the summit in Switzerland for peace in Ukraine, where dozens of world leaders are expected, but without Moscow or Beijing.

Mr. Macron will leave on Saturday evening. Sunday, he will be represented, indicated the Élysée.
