Local High School Athletes Shine at Annual Track and Field Meet

Students from various high schools in Saskatchewan showcased their athletic talents at the recent SHSAA track and field meet in Saskatoon.

UNITY – The Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association’s annual track and field meet brought together track stars from different schools and districts in the province on June 7 and 8 in Saskatoon.

Despite challenging weather conditions, with strong winds on the first day and cooler temperatures on the second day, students from Cut Knife, Neilburg, Unity, Macklin, Wilkie, Kerrobert, and Luseland competed fiercely.

While not all students were able to secure a top 10 finish, some standout performances were seen from Luseland School, Neilburg Composite School, McLurg High School, and Unity Composite School athletes. Lily Holman from Luseland impressed with seventh place in the 400m, and second place finishes in both the 800m and 1500m races in her age group. Jace Newport from Neilburg took third place in javelin.

McLurg High School had a strong showing with Kayden Fenrich winning the javelin event in the intermediate age group, and Carter Wakelin placing third in the senior javelin event. Cheyanne Cey, Emerson Cey, Luke Garrett, and Reese Fenrich also delivered solid performances in various events.

Unity Composite School, represented by a team of 16 students, may not have landed on the podium, but Coach Michelle Van De Meutter praised their efforts. Standout performances included Dawson Gilbert in the 100m hurdles and high jump, Dawson Rusk in high jump, and Keanna Kelly and Jordis Zunti in the discus event.

Overall, it was a successful meet with athletes achieving personal bests and showcasing their dedication to their sport. Congratulations to all participants on their accomplishments!
