Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City Film Sets Destroyed, Future Exhibition Plans Uncertain
An insider has revealed that the government’s hopes of preserving the film sets from the movie Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In for a public exhibition have been dashed. The source explained that the sets were dismantled and any preservation would require the production of a sequel or prequel with new sets. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung mentioned that augmented reality may be used to showcase the exhibits, but finding a suitable display location remains a challenge.
The successful film has brought attention back to the Kowloon Walled City, a once densely populated enclave known for its chaotic infrastructure and lawless reputation. Despite the movie’s popularity, the future of the iconic sets used in the film remains uncertain. Producer John Chong Ching has called for the government to establish a film studio to support the local industry and ease the process of creating intricate film sets.
Director Soi Cheang and the cast members have received acclaim for their portrayal of the historic Walled City, shedding light on its intriguing past. The movie’s success at Cannes and in the box office has sparked interest in the preservation of the sets, prompting discussions about their restoration and potential exhibition as public displays.
