For many teenagers and young adults, their first apartment of their own is the final step in separating from their parents. But more and more are still living with mom and dad even in their mid-20s.

According to a press release from the Federal Statistical Office, 27.5 percent of 25-year-old Germans still live with their parents. This shows a striking gender distribution. While only one in five 25-year-olds still lives in their parents’ home, the situation is different for men: almost one in three still lives at home with their parents. The figures refer to the year 2023.

By the age of 30, this proportion drops significantly to just under ten percent. Among 30-year-olds, 13 percent of men and 6 percent of women still live with their parents. At 40, the proportion is 5 percent for men and around 2 percent for women.

Young adults in Germany leave home early compared to other EU countries. According to the EU statistics agency Eurostat, the average age at which people move out in Germany is 23.9 years, while the EU average is 26.3 years. Children in Northern Europe move out even earlier: Finland, Denmark and Sweden have the lowest moving out ages, between 21.4 and 21.8 years.

In southern and eastern European countries, however, children move out of their parents’ home much later. The highest rate was found in Croatia. Young Croatians do not move into their first apartment until they are on average 31.8 years old, followed by Slovakia at 31 years old. Greeks and Bulgarians also do not move out of their parents’ home before they are on average 30.

In almost all EU countries, it is daughters who move out earlier than sons. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the average age at which women move out of the home in Germany is 23.1 years and 24.7 years for men.

The Federal Statistical Office publishes annual figures on young people moving out of their parents’ home. A comparison with the survey for 2022 shows that the average age of moving out is slowly increasing. For Germany, it rose by just over a month within a year. Frontrunner Croatia, on the other hand, is seeing a downward trend. Compared to the previous year, young Croatians moved out 1.6 years earlier.

The gender difference in the age at which people move out has widened slightly in Germany. Sons and daughters are moving out a little later than in 2022. However, the age at which people move out increased by 0.1 years for women and by 0.2 years for men.
