A police officer was killed in a serious accident in Stuttgart. He was escorting Hungarian President Viktor Orban to the airport. Another police officer was seriously injured.

In a tragic traffic accident on Monday morning in Stuttgart-Degerloch, a 61-year-old police officer was so seriously injured that he died shortly afterwards in hospital. Another 27-year-old police officer suffered serious injuries and is being treated in hospital. The public prosecutor’s office and the Stuttgart police announced this in a statement.

The Stuttgart traffic police motorcycle squad escorted Hungarian President Viktor Orban to Stuttgart Airport on Löffelstrasse at around 11:15 a.m. “At this point, a 69-year-old BMW driver wanted to turn left from Rubensstrasse into Löffelstrasse. She apparently overlooked the fact that the intersection had already been closed off by the police for the convoy and collided with the 61-year-old’s convoy motorcycle,” the public prosecutor’s office said in the statement. The force of the impact subsequently caused the motorcycle to be thrown against the police motorcycle of the 27-year-old, who had cordoned off the intersection area.

Both police officers were seriously injured in the collision. The 61-year-old died of his injuries in hospital shortly afterwards. The 27-year-old police officer was seriously injured and taken to a clinic for further treatment.

“We are deeply shocked by the accident of our colleagues. The tragic circumstances surrounding the death of our valued colleague have left us speechless and have hit the entire Stuttgart police force to the core. Our thoughts are with his family, relatives and friends. We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to our colleague who was also seriously injured in the accident,” said Police Chief Markus Eisenbraun.
