Hungary will not stand in the way of further NATO aid for Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia. However, the government in Budapest will not participate in this itself, said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday after talks with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Hungary will not provide personnel or money. “At the same time, the Prime Minister assured me that Hungary will not oppose these efforts,” Stoltenberg said.

At the NATO summit in Washington in July, the military alliance is expected to adopt a new system for predictable and long-term security for Ukraine and support for military training. Since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, Hungary has repeatedly expressed its opposition to aid for the country. Because NATO decisions are subject to unanimity, Hungary practically has a right of veto.

Stoltenberg now said that he had agreed with Orban on “modalities for Hungary’s non-participation in NATO support for Ukraine”. He did not give any details, but stressed that Hungary would fully fulfil its obligations as a NATO member.
