Ian McKellen Confirms Role in New Lord of the Rings Film on One Condition
Ian McKellen, known for his portrayal of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings franchise, has revealed that he will star in the upcoming film centered on Andy Serkis’s Gollum, under one morbid condition. The news comes after Warner Bros announced “The Hunt for Gollum” last month, sparking rumors of McKellen’s potential involvement.
In a recent interview, McKellen addressed the speculation surrounding his return as Gandalf, stating that while he has heard talks of his character’s appearance in the film, there is currently no script, offer, or plan in place. However, the 85-year-old actor expressed his willingness to reprise the role “if I’m alive.”
Reflecting on his age and mortality, McKellen shared that he often considers whether each new project could be his last. He admitted that as he receives scripts or offers, he contemplates the possibility that it might be his final job, leading him to make more selective choices.
“The Hunt for Gollum” marks the beginning of a series of new Lord of the Rings franchises set to be released by Warner Bros in the next decade. Andy Serkis, who will direct the film, expressed his excitement for the project, emphasizing the thrill of returning to Middle-earth with his colleagues and collaborators.
Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the original producers of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, also shared their enthusiasm for the upcoming film, highlighting their deep connection to J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythology and their pride in embarking on another epic adventure.
As fans eagerly anticipate the return to Middle-earth, McKellen’s potential reprisal of his iconic role as Gandalf adds an extra layer of excitement to the highly anticipated “The Hunt for Gollum.”
