Idina Menzel is set to make her Broadway comeback early next year in a new musical titled “Redwood.” The musical follows the story of a woman seeking healing among ancient trees.
Menzel, a beloved star in the industry known for her roles in “Rent” and “Wicked,” as well as voicing Elsa in the “Frozen” films, has not performed on Broadway in a decade. The show was initially produced at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego earlier this year and will now make its way to Broadway.
“Redwood” was conceived by Menzel and Tina Landau, who is also directing the production. The music features compositions by Kate Diaz and lyrics by Landau and Diaz. The Broadway production is being produced by Eva Price, Caroline Kaplan, and Loudmouth Media, with a capitalization of up to $16 million.
The producers have announced that “Redwood” will open on Broadway next year, during the current theater season, which means it is expected to open between January and April. Landau is also committed to directing a production of “Floyd Collins,” set to open on Broadway next April. The specific theater for “Redwood” has not been disclosed, and no other cast members have been named yet.
