Body camera footage from Ogle County, Illinois shows the intense moments when three first responders were shot during a confrontation at a home in Dixon. The suspect, 32-year-old Jonathan Gounaris, is now facing charges of attempted first degree murder and multiple weapons offenses. Gounaris is expected to appear in court on Thursday at 3 p.m. as stated by his attorney. Sheriff Brian VanVickle mentioned that this is an active investigation that requires time to review multiple body camera videos and forensic evidence.

The incident began when the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office received a call on June 12 regarding an individual who was threatening suicide and homicide. The homeowner reported that her son had multiple firearms in his possession. After numerous attempts to contact the individual, an emergency response team entered the home where they were met with gunfire as soon as they opened the doors. Deputies returned fire and were able to subdue the suspect.

During the exchange of gunfire, three deputies were injured. Tyler Carls, a tactical medic from the Rochelle Fire Department, was struck in the armor, City of Oregon Police Sergeant Tad Deminsky suffered a gunshot wound to the upper arm, and Lieutenant Jason Ketter of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office was hit in the face. Despite their injuries, all three deputies have been released from the hospital.

Gounaris, the suspect, was found inside the home with a gunshot wound to his stomach. He underwent surgery at a local hospital for his injury. Authorities discovered that Gounaris was in possession of multiple firearms, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray, and ballistic armor. It was noted that Gounaris’ firearms owner’s identification card had been revoked before the incident due to a clear and present danger report.

The Illinois State Police are now leading the investigation into the shooting. Sheriff VanVickle mentioned that a review of the incident will be conducted once the criminal proceedings against Gounaris are concluded to determine if any agency policy violations occurred. The community in Ogle County, a rural area west of Chicago, was shaken by the violent confrontation that unfolded.

The bravery and quick actions of the first responders undoubtedly prevented further harm during this dangerous situation. It serves as a reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers and emergency personnel face in the line of duty. The body camera footage provides valuable insight into the intensity of the situation and the professionalism displayed by those involved. As the investigation continues, the community remains grateful for the dedication and sacrifice of those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others.
