An Indianapolis couple, Mirianne Pierre and Watson Joseph, both 31 years old, were charged with child neglect after leaving their two children locked in their SUV without air conditioning at Walmart. The temperatures outside were in the mid-90s, and the temperature inside the Ford SUV reached a dangerous 125 degrees. A passerby noticed the children and called 911 around 7 p.m., leading to the couple’s arrest.
The children were found in distress, with one child sweating profusely and the other appearing dazed. Both parents were confused when they came out of the store and found police and first responders. The children were placed in the custody of the Department of Child Services, and the parents were charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent.
Surveillance footage showed that the couple had left the children unattended for 45 minutes while they shopped inside the store. The children were examined by paramedics and found to have unusually high blood pressure for their ages, but otherwise fine.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department issued a warning to parents, emphasizing the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, especially in hot weather. IMPD Sgt. Anthony Patterson stressed that temperatures inside a car can rise rapidly once the engine is turned off, posing serious risks to children left inside.
It is crucial for parents to always ensure the safety and well-being of their children, especially in extreme weather conditions. Leaving children unattended in vehicles can have severe consequences and should be avoided at all costs. The safety and protection of children should always be the top priority for parents and caregivers.
