FBI Director Christopher Wray recently shared some key details about the explosive devices found in Thomas Matthew Crooks’ car and home during his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. Wray revealed that investigators have discovered three ‘relatively crude’ explosive devices that they believe belonged to Crooks. Two of these devices were found in Crooks’ vehicle near the rally in Butler, while the third was found in his home.
Despite their crude nature, Wray mentioned that the bombs were rigged for remote detonation. Although he did not provide specifics about the range of the remote detonators, he clarified that Crooks did not attempt to set them off before being killed by Secret Service counter snipers.
Moreover, Wray disclosed that Crooks had the remote detonator for the explosives with him on the rooftop when he carried out the attack on Trump. The FBI director noted that the on-off switch on the detonator indicated it would not have functioned had Crooks tried to activate the bombs after opening fire on Trump.
In terms of communication, Wray confirmed that the FBI has managed to access Crooks’ phone, but their progress has been hindered by Crooks’ regular use of encrypted messaging apps. This has raised the possibility that Crooks may have had one or more accomplices.
Additionally, the FBI recovered the drone that Crooks used to survey the area where Trump’s rally was being held. Both the drone and the controller were found in Crooks’ vehicle at the time of the incident. Investigators believe that Crooks flew the drone around the venue between 3:50 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the day of the rally, positioning it approximately 200 yards away from the stage.
The new insights provided by Wray shed light on the planning and execution of the attempted assassination of former President Trump by Crooks. The discovery of the explosive devices, the use of encrypted messaging apps, and the reconnaissance conducted with the drone all point to a premeditated and calculated attack.
As the investigation continues, it remains crucial for law enforcement agencies to delve deeper into Crooks’ motives, potential connections, and any other individuals who may have been involved in the planning and execution of this heinous act. The details shared by Wray underscore the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
