A police check following a hit-and-run at a campsite ends painfully for the law enforcement officers.

A drunk driver injured two police officers at a campsite in Drage, Harburg district, as reported by NDR. The 40-year-old man is said to have bitten one of the police officers on the finger so hard that the fingertip was torn off despite the glove he was wearing.

According to police information quoted by NDR, witnesses alerted officers after the heavily intoxicated man damaged a parked car and a lamppost and then fled. During the subsequent confrontation with police officers, he is said to have behaved aggressively and refused to give a blood sample. He then kicked a 29-year-old policewoman in the stomach and bit her 28-year-old colleague on the finger.

Despite his resistance, the officers were eventually able to overpower the man and take him to a hospital for a blood sample. He is now being investigated for grievous bodily harm and other offenses. It remains unclear to what extent the injuries of the two police officers will affect their ability to continue working.

The case can be seen as an example of how drivers should not behave during a police check. Even if honest drivers have nothing to fear from a check without suspicion, they should still follow a few rules of conduct and be aware of the tricks used by law enforcement officers. In principle, it is permissible to carry out a so-called general traffic check without suspicion.

However, those being stopped do not have to answer every question. These include the three classic questions. The questions “do you know why you were stopped?”, “where are you coming from?” and “where are you going?” are often asked to create initial suspicion. This can then justify further measures.

Officers also often shine a light into the face of a driver being checked without asking in order to check the pupil reaction. However, this actually requires verbal consent.

Another common “trick” is to look in the trunk to check for the presence of the warning triangle. Here, too, the driver is allowed to object, as the interior of the vehicle is off-limits to the officers. At the end of the inspection, it is advisable to take your time to examine the documents that have to be signed. There is no obligation to sign on the spot.
