Jude Law has revealed the unconventional method he used to get into character for his role as England’s King Henry VIII in the upcoming movie “Firebrand.” Law, who portrays the historical figure alongside co-star Alicia Vikander and director Karim Aïnouz, explained that he wore a perfume that smelled like blood and fecal matter to enhance his performance.
Speaking at the 2024 Tribeca Festival premiere of the film, Law described the perfume as a “stinky method” that helped create a realistic environment for his acting. He praised Aïnouz for his immersive approach to filmmaking, which included using scents to enhance the authenticity of the production.
In addition to the unique perfume, Law and Vikander immersed themselves in the world of Henry VIII by enduring cold temperatures on set and working with live animals, which were common during the time period. Law explained that he wanted to capture the essence of the historical figure, including his infamous stench due to his rotten legs.
The movie “Firebrand” follows Vikander’s character, Katherine Parr, as she navigates the treacherous Tudor court during the final months of Henry VIII’s rule. Aïnouz, the film’s director, expressed his admiration for Parr’s progressive beliefs and courage, which often put her at odds with the paranoid monarch.
Aïnouz shared that he was inspired to make the movie to shed light on the lesser-known story of Katherine Parr, who is often overshadowed by Henry VIII in historical narratives. He hopes that “Firebrand” will serve as a tribute to Parr’s resilience and contributions to history.
“Firebrand” is set to premiere in theaters on June 14, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the Tudor era and the remarkable women who shaped it. Jude Law’s dedication to his role as Henry VIII, including his use of unconventional methods like the stinky perfume, highlights the commitment of the cast and crew to bringing this historical drama to life in a compelling and authentic way.
