More than a week after the 2024 Election Day, the final results are still pending as five House races remain uncalled. Republican Donald Trump secured the presidency, and the GOP is set to hold the Senate majority. While the GOP is expected to maintain control of the House of Representatives, the exact size of their majority is uncertain until all votes are tallied. Currently, Republicans hold 218 seats, while Democrats have 212.
In California’s 21st Congressional District, Democrat Jim Costa secured re-election against Republican challenger Michael Mayer. Additionally, Democrat Josh Harder emerged victorious over Republican Kevin Lincoln in California’s 9th Congressional District. In Maine’s 2nd District, Democrat Jared Golden narrowly defeated Republican Austin Theriault to secure re-election. Democrat Janelle Bynum is projected to unseat Republican incumbent Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer in Oregon’s 5th Congressional District.
Several House races in California are yet to be decided, with only about three-quarters of the votes counted as of Tuesday. The California secretary of state has requested patience, stating that results will be certified on December 13.
In Alaska’s at-large district, Democratic incumbent Rep. Mary Sattler Peltola is trailing behind Republican Nick Begich by over 3 points. In California’s 13th Congressional District, Republican Rep. John Duarte holds a slim lead over Democrat Adam Gray, with 84% of the votes counted. Incumbent Republican Rep. Michelle Steel leads Democrat Derek Tran by a few hundred votes in the 45th Congressional District.
Republican incumbent Rep. Mariannet Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District maintains a less than 1% lead over challenger Christina Bohannan, with Bohannan requesting a recount. Democratic incumbent Marcy Kaptur leads Republican Derek Merrin by less than 1 point in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District.
Races with a margin of 0.5% or less trigger an automatic recount in Ohio. The Associated Press has not yet called some races due to the close margins. As votes continue to be counted, the final outcome of these key House races will determine the size of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives.
