Uvalde Reaches $2 Million Settlement with Families of Children Killed in School Massacre
In a tragic incident that shook the small town of Uvalde, Texas, the families of children who were killed and injured in a school massacre two years ago have reached a $2 million settlement with the city. The agreement comes after a young man armed with an AR-15 rifle entered a primary school on May 24, 2022, killing 19 children aged nine to ten, as well as two teachers.
The families, represented by attorney Josh Koskoff, have also filed a lawsuit against the State of Texas and 92 members of the state’s public safety organization, as well as school officials. The Department of Justice had previously criticized a series of failures in command, decision-making, tactics, policies, and training that contributed to the tragic event.
Aside from the financial settlement, the city has agreed to enhance police training and provide ongoing psychological support to survivors and their families. Additionally, a memorial will be constructed in honor of the victims, and May 24 will be designated as a day of remembrance.
This settlement applies to the families of 17 of the deceased children and two injured children, symbolizing a step towards rebuilding trust. The incident underscores the ongoing debate surrounding gun control in a politically divided United States.
