(Winnipeg) Police will not lay charges in connection with a bus crash that killed 17 people in western Manitoba last year.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) say they do not expect to be able to speak to the bus driver, who was seriously injured in the crash.

The police also indicate that officers found no explanation as to why he stopped at an intersection when it was unsafe.

The bus, which was transporting elderly people to a casino, collided with a tractor-trailer while crossing the Trans-Canada Highway near the town of Carberry in June last year.

RCMP reported that the truck, which was traveling east on the highway, had the right of way and attempted to avoid the crash.

Police handed over their findings to the Crown in January, including forensic reports and interviews with witnesses and survivors.

A memorial for the victims was unveiled earlier this month in Dauphin, where most of the victims were from.
