A young woman is feeling insecure because she refused to give a woman with her handbag a seat on the bus. What are the rules on public transport?
Using a seat on the bus for your bag and thereby depriving someone else of the opportunity to sit? Many of us probably think that’s absurd. Nevertheless, one woman behaved in this way and is now asking the online community for advice on Reddit.
She writes that the bus she takes home from work is almost never even half full. The bag she had with her was slightly dirty. “I don’t want to put the bag on the floor,” reads the text on the platform used by millions of people. So she put it on the seat next to her. There were two free seats in front of her and behind her.
“Yesterday, when I was driving home, a woman got on the bus. She made a face at me,” the woman claims. The passenger gestured for the young woman to remove her bag from the seat so that it would be free.
“As always, there were many empty seats,” the woman continued. She also said that she was not sitting in a handicapped-accessible area, but simply near the door. Nevertheless, she gave in and took the bag away – but she rolled her eyes.
The woman who got on, who was said to be in her late 40s, then became louder. She said loudly to the bag owner: “You need to learn better manners.” The woman then stood up and sat down somewhere else. “Did I really behave wrongly?” she asks the community.
However, she agreed with her behavior. If the bus had been full or she had been in an area reserved for people with mobility issues, things would have been a little different. However, her approach was in keeping with the etiquette of public transport rules.
There are no official rules in this regard, but we all know certain behavioral patterns that we adhere to when we travel on public transport. Nevertheless, arguments do arise again and again, and can sometimes escalate – as in the case of a woman who argued with a disabled train passenger about the reserved seat.
