In order to reduce car traffic, the Hessian city of Marburg has come up with a new program. The aim is to encourage citizens to give up their cars by offering them financial incentives.

Residents of the city of Marburg will receive around 1,250 euros if they deregister their car and do without it completely. The initiative is called “Incentive program for switching to environmentally friendly mobility” and has been in effect since June 14. “t-online” reports on this.

The money paid out can be used for various offers. For example, it can be used for local public transport or car sharing offers. Or as vouchers for shopping or restaurant visits in Marburg.

The new program should also be worthwhile for the city of Marburg. It should relieve the strained parking situation in the city. This will not only save money, but the parking spaces can also be used for other purposes. For example, the areas could be planted or bicycle paths built.

“One third of car owners in cities with good mobility options say that they hardly need their own car at all,” stresses Marburg City Councilor Michael Kopatz (Greens). The city therefore assumes that it should not be difficult for Marburg residents to do without a car.
