The millionaire Marlene Engelhorn is giving away 25 million euros. A citizens’ council will decide how the money should be used. The decision will be announced on June 9th.

Marlene Engelhorn, a 32-year-old millionaire from Vienna, has decided to give away part of her fortune. This is reported by “heute.at”. Engelhorn, who has become known in the past for her protests against the super-rich, has announced that she will give 25 million euros back to society.

On June 9th, it will be officially announced where the money will go. Engelhorn herself has no say in the distribution of her assets. The only condition is that the money cannot be used for purposes that violate the constitution, human rights or democracy.

The reason: She considers her wealth to be pure luck, as she was born into a wealthy industrial family, and is convinced that “wealth never arises in a vacuum, but always in exchange with others.”

A citizens’ council will now decide how the 25 million euros will be used. The council meetings took place in Salzburg between March and June and the participants were paid accordingly for their time. According to Engelhorn, this discussion is intended to be “a service to democracy”, which is why the 50 council members should also be appropriately compensated. Every weekend they receive a salary of 1200 euros, and the substitute members also receive an expense allowance.

Engelhorn herself came into possession of so much money because she is the descendant of a founder of the chemical company BASF, reports the “FAS”. The heiress wants to give 90 percent of her assets back to society.
