Launched at the Cannes Film Festival, Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious film which he himself financed, will arrive in theaters on September 27 through the distributor Lionsgate.

The director of The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now has been simmering this project for 45 years. Now 85, he has invested $120 million to make it a reality.

The result, however, divided critics. Our columnist Marc Cassivi called the work “a Roman chariot accident.”

Starring Adam Driver (House of Gucci, Marriage Story) as architect Cesar Catilina, Megalopolis is set in a futuristic metropolis called New Rome. Following a catastrophe that ravaged the city, he wanted to make it a utopia.

The film has a brilliant cast including Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight and Laurence Fishburne.
