She waited and waited, but the guest from America did not come: To shorten an involuntary wait at the G-7 summit, host Giorgia Meloni reached for her cell phone. The Italian head of government took a photo of herself in front of the many assembled cameramen and photographers. The 47-year-old smiled professionally into the camera, with hundreds of media people visible behind her.

US President Joe Biden arrived quite late at the official welcome ceremony for the summit of the seven major industrial nations (G7).

Meloni, leader of the Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) party, is one of the politicians who uses social media extensively to share photos of themselves. After Biden finally arrived about 20 minutes late, she obviously had other things to do in the first few hours of the summit than post the selfie. She did not initially upload it to her social media accounts.

The heads of state and government from Canada, Japan, Great Britain, France and Germany are also attending the summit in the luxury hotel “Borgo Egnazia”. They arrived on time for the welcome. The meeting lasts until Saturday.
