(Dublin) From a bunker, Scottie Scheffler hit a ball that fell into the water after passing the green.
He sent a tee shot out of bounds, leading to a triple bogey.
He needed three putts on his last hole.
Despite all that, Scheffler finished the third round of the Memorial with a four-shot lead after a 71.
Sitting at 10 under with a total of 206, Scheffler is looking for a fifth victory this year.
His closest rivals are Canadian Adam Hadwin (72), Collin Morikawa (68) and Sepp Straka (68).
Hadwin made an eagle by sinking a 30-foot putt, but he also made a double bogey. That came from a three-putt at the 14th, where his approach shot put him 15 feet from the pennant.
Morikawa had a bogey-free round (Straka too), in addition to delivering a sequence of three birdies in four holes.
Scheffler always stayed ahead, even after his triple bogey. He led by three strokes when the round began.
“I did a great job of starting fresh and bouncing back,” he summed up.
Morikawa prevailed at the Muirfield Village club in 2020, at the Workday Open.
“I’m going to have to get a really good score on Sunday,” Morikawa said. The holes can be deceiving here. You may think you have a birdie opportunity but if you miss the fairway, it’s going to be difficult to get a par. »
Rory McIlroy played 73 for 214, in 11th place.
Defending champion Viktor Hovland slipped to 14th with a 77.
He had a disastrous second nine with four bogeys in a row and a double bogey in the space of six holes.
