Next year, the new Broadway musical about Michael Jackson will moonwalk across America.
“MJ” is packed with dozens songs by the King Of Pop. It will be touring 17 cities in two years, starting in 2023. The Chicago James M. Nederlander Theatre will host the event on July 15, 2023.
Producer Lia Vollack stated that they were thrilled by the Broadway response for ‘MJ’ and are now deep in preparations to bring the show to Chicago and the United States. “Chicago is a top theater and music destination. We are thrilled to be able start this journey in one the Nederlander Organization’s most beautiful venues.”
At a later date, additional tour engagements will be announced and the complete cast. A previously announced two-week engagement at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte (North Carolina) will be part of the tour, which runs from Sept. 26 to Oct. 8, 2023.
This musical features most of Jackson’s (and the Jackson 5’s) biggest hits including “ABC”, “Black or White”, “Blame It on the Boogie,” and “Blame It On the Boogie,” as well as “Bad,” and “Billie Jean.”
A fictional MTV film crew has been granted access to Jackson’s 1992 “Dangerous Tour” preparation. This is the framing technique used in the bio. Jackson reveals his life and approaches, and shows a perfectionist edge. It’s the work of Lynn Nottage, playwright, and Christopher Wheeldon, director and choreographer. The Michael Jackson estate has approved the musical; Jackson died in 2009.
Broadway critics were split over the musical. Many were disappointed that it avoided molestation accusations, which Jackson later resisted. However, almost everyone agreed that the music and dancing were excellent, as well as Myles Frost, the lead man.
