When Milwaukee was selected as the host city for the Republican National Convention, local businesses were hopeful for a significant economic boost. However, the impact of the convention has been mixed for business owners in the area.
While some establishments have experienced a surge in customers, others have seen a decline in foot traffic during the event. Cheraty Par, the owner of an Awi Sushi location near the convention site, noted that most of her regular customers were working remotely, leading to a significant decrease in lunchtime business despite efforts to attract convention attendees.
On the other hand, The New Fashioned, a restaurant near the Fiserv Forum where the convention took place, saw a considerable increase in customers. The restaurant was so busy that the marketing director had to help out behind the bar. Marla Poytinger, the owner and CEO of the restaurant’s parent company, described the influx of customers as equivalent to five Bucks games in one day.
Overall, the impact of the Republican National Convention on local businesses in Milwaukee has been a mixed bag. While some establishments have benefited from increased spending and foot traffic, others have struggled to attract customers during the event. The contrast in experiences highlights the complexity of hosting a major political event and its impact on the local economy.
