A group of cavers exploring a cave in Virginia made an incredible discovery over the weekend. While venturing through Giant Caverns in the town of Narrows, they stumbled upon a dog that was still alive, surrounded by animal skulls and bones.
Dave Jackson and Jesse Rochette from the educational cave simulator company CaveSim were with a local couple when the first member spotted the dog. Rochette, who rappelled down into the cave to rescue the pup, used a piece of salami to coax the dog closer.
The cavers quickly turned their exploration into a rescue mission, wrapping the dog in blankets and using makeshift rescue gear to lift her out of the cave. The dog, named SPAR-C, was then taken to a veterinary hospital and later to the Giles County Animal Shelter.
Despite being found 40 to 50 feet down in the cave, SPAR-C miraculously had no broken bones. Although she had difficulty using her back legs, the shelter expected her to recover with medication, rest, and proper nutrition.
In an update posted on social media, the shelter announced that SPAR-C, now named Sparsy, was up and moving around. Her medical expenses had been covered, and the shelter was still searching for her owner. If her recovery continues at this pace, Sparsy will soon be ready for a new forever home.
The heartwarming rescue story captured the attention of many, with the shelter dubbing Sparsy as a “living miracle.” The community rallied together to support the dog’s recovery and help her find a loving family to call her own.
