All races on the Montreal Triathlon program scheduled for Sunday have been canceled due to air quality.
The decision taken jointly by the organizers of the event and the Department of Public Health was announced in the morning. The organizations claimed that “the forecast does not indicate that the index will improve during the day”, which was also a factor.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of athletes, spectators, volunteers, staff and everyone involved in the event,” they said in a statement.
In the elite category, the mixed relay was to take place on Sunday. The women’s and men’s individual events took place on Saturday. The mixed relay in the junior and U23 category were also on the schedule on Sunday.
According to the IQAir website, the air quality index in Montreal was 202 around 2 p.m. In addition to being in the “very bad” category, the metropolitan index was the worst in the world, among major cities.
