A New York Police Department inspector is facing serious charges after being accused of trying to cover up his girlfriend’s drunken crash involving his police car and a cab. Deputy Inspector Paul Zangrilli allegedly lied to investigators and attempted to erase incriminating video footage of the incident. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and his lawyer stated that he looks forward to defending his good name.

According to prosecutors, Zangrilli was out drinking with his girlfriend when he allowed her to drive his unmarked police vehicle, which she crashed into a cab. Instead of reporting the incident, Zangrilli switched seats with his girlfriend and continued driving. When the cab driver approached them, Zangrilli allegedly offered money instead of exchanging insurance information. He then made false claims to a police captain and tried to erase video footage of the night.

The Manhattan District Attorney condemned Zangrilli’s actions, stating that they were incredibly dangerous and put the safety of others at risk. Zangrilli is facing multiple felony charges, including tampering with evidence and falsifying business records, as well as misdemeanors for misconduct and obstruction. He has been suspended without pay by the NYPD.

It’s important to hold public servants accountable when they violate the public trust, as stated by the District Attorney. Zangrilli’s girlfriend was also charged with drinking while driving and pleaded not guilty. The cab driver who was injured in the crash settled a lawsuit against the city for $75,000.

The case highlights the importance of honesty and accountability, especially for those in positions of authority. It serves as a reminder that attempting to cover up mistakes can have serious consequences and that the safety of the public should always be a top priority for law enforcement officials.
