San Miguel Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico is considered the oldest church in the United States. The church was built around 1610 to serve a small congregation of soldiers, laborers, and Indians. Although the first historical record of the church dates back to 1628, oral history suggests it may have been constructed even earlier, in conjunction with the founding of Santa Fe.
The chapel was dedicated to Archangel Michael, and a statue of him still stands at the site today. Over the years, San Miguel Chapel has undergone various reconstructions due to damage, including the burning of the roof during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The church was rebuilt in 1710, with further repairs funded by the mayor of Santa Fe in 1798. In 1887, the community came together for another rebuild when the church was almost demolished due to extensive repairs needed.
Despite the changes made during reconstructions, parts of the original walls still remain intact, showcasing the rich history of the church. Visitors can also view the 780-pound San Jose Bell that used to be in the bell tower, which fell during a storm in 1872 but is now displayed inside the chapel.
San Miguel Chapel continues to be open to the public today, hosting religious services as well as various events like concerts, celebrations, and ceremonies. Guests can take a tour of the property to learn more about the church’s history and unique architecture. An events calendar is available online for those interested in attending any upcoming activities at the chapel.
