(Sydney) Australian swimmer Cate Campbell, four-time Olympic relay champion, announced Thursday that she was ending her career at the age of 32 after failing to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“I gave everything I had in my quest for a fifth Olympics and therefore, even in failure, there is a reason for pride,” commented the 50 and 100m specialist in a press release. .
“I’m now looking forward to supporting the Australian swimmers, and all the Australian athletes in Paris,” she added.
During her more than 15-year career, Cate Campbell has notably stacked relay titles, winning gold three times in the world championships and four times at the Olympics, from London 2012 to Tokyo in 2021.
In 2008, in Beijing, she won the bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay, but also in the 50m freestyle individually. Still individually, she was then crowned world champion in the 100m freestyle in 2013.
Earlier this month, Campbell unsuccessfully attempted to qualify for the Paris Games (July 26–August 11) in the 50 and 100m freestyles during the Australian trials.
She is the second of the four runners who won the 4x100m in Tokyo three years ago to retire, after Chelsea Hodges. Only 22 years old, the latter had given up even before the Australian selections, citing recurring physical problems.
