(Montreal) Quebecer Maude Charron is one of two weightlifters who have been officially named to the Canadian weightlifting team for the Paris Olympic Games this summer.
Charron, from Rimouski, who competes in the 59 kg category, will be accompanied by Ontario’s Broady Santavy, in the 89 kg category, announced Canada Weightlifting in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee on Tuesday morning.
Charron qualified for the Paris Olympics by virtue of her rank in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) world rankings, taking third place in her weight category.
In her Olympic debut in Tokyo 2021, Charron became only the second weightlifter from Canada to win an Olympic gold medal. She finished first in the women’s 64kg event after lifting a total of 236kg, four more than the silver medalist.
Her bodyweight, at that point, was two kilos lighter than she was in Tokyo 2021, having started to transition to the 59kg weight class because the 64kg event was removed from the Olympic program for the Paris Olympics.
“I am delighted to represent Canada once again at the Olympic Games,” Charron said in a press release. There are only two of us on the team to represent our sport and our country, and we are going to do our best to make Canadians proud of us. »
The weightlifting competitions will take place from August 7 to 11 at the Aréna Paris Sud 6. The Charron event will take place on August 8.
