(London) World number one Scottie Scheffler, number two Rory McIllroy and reigning Olympic champion Xander Schauffele are the leaders of the 60 golfers who qualified for the Paris Olympics, the list of which was announced on Tuesday.
The 60 players, determined based on the world rankings published by the International Golf Federation, will represent 32 different countries in early August on the Golf National de Guyancourt course, site of the 2018 Ryder Cup, west of Paris.
The top 15 in the world rankings were eligible for the Games, with a maximum of four golfers from any one country. Beyond 15th place, other qualifiers are qualified based on their ranking and the limit of two players per country (not already having two or more players among the top 15).
The United States will be represented by Scottie Scheffler (number one), Xander Schauffele (number three), crowned at the Tokyo Games and winner of the PGA Championship this year, Wyndham Clark (number five), tied for 3rd in the U.S. Open Sunday at Pinehurst and Collin Morikawa (number seven).
Bryson DeChambeau, winner of this United States Open, but 6th American in the world rankings, will not go to the Games.
World number two Rory McIllroy will represent Ireland with 2019 British Open winner Shane Lowry. McIlroy announced on Monday that he was taking a few weeks off after collapsing at the very end of the State Open -United on Sunday, probably the “hardest” moment of his career. He was two shots ahead of DeChambeau with 5 holes remaining, before making three bogeys in four holes.
Great Britain will field 2022 U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood.
