(London) Rebecca Welch will become on December 23 the first woman to referee a Premier League match, the English first division football championship.
She was appointed on Thursday to take charge of the match between Fulham and Burnley counting for the 18th day of the championship.
A referee since 2010, alongside a job at the National Health Service, the British public health service, Rebecca Welch has amassed firsts. In 2021, she was the first woman to referee a Football League match, a Fourth Division match between Harrogate and Port Vale, before officiating in the Championship (second division) and the FA Cup.
She regularly referees women’s competitions, including the Women’s World Cup last summer.
