Princess Madeleine of Sweden and her family are moving back to their home country after living in the United States for six years. The royal, along with her husband Christopher O’Neill and their three children Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas, and Princess Adrienne, have been residing in Florida since 2018. Their move back to Sweden was initially planned for last summer but was postponed.
In an Instagram post celebrating Madeleine’s 42nd birthday on June 10, the Royal House of Sweden announced that the family was now ready to relocate to the country’s capital city, Stockholm. The post included a formal portrait of the family dressed in coordinating outfits.
The princess and her family relocated to Florida from London in 2018. The move back to Sweden was delayed until 2024, according to the Royal Court of Sweden’s information manager, Margareta Thorgren. The postponement was not due to immigration issues or house sale but rather to allow the family more time to prepare for the move.
Last June, Madeleine and her family visited Sweden to celebrate the National Day holiday. The royal shared a photo of the family dressed in traditional Swedish attire, expressing their love for the country. In March 2023, the Swedish palace confirmed that Madeleine and her family would be moving back to Sweden permanently, with the children starting school in Stockholm.
Madeleine is seventh in line to the Swedish throne and has experience living in America, having moved to New York City in 2010 and worked for Queen Silvia’s World Childhood Foundation. After marrying O’Neill in 2013, the couple lived in New York City before moving to Florida full-time.
Over the past year, Madeleine has shared glimpses of their life in Florida on social media, including celebrating Halloween and attending local events. The family will now take up permanent residence in an apartment at the Royal Stables in Stockholm.
In 2019, the Swedish palace announced that the children of Madeleine and O’Neill, along with those of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, would no longer hold the titles of His and Her Royal Highness. However, they would retain their titles of Prince and Princess as personal titles, not as working members of the royal family.
Madeleine addressed the change on Instagram, expressing her support for her children to have more freedom in shaping their own lives in the future. The family’s move back to Sweden marks a new chapter in their lives as they return to their roots and embrace their heritage.
