After the surprising reversal of the verdict against former film mogul Harvey Weinstein, the public prosecutor’s office wants to reopen the case. They have now shared further details at a hearing.
In a new trial against former film mogul Harvey Weinstein in New York, the prosecution believes that significantly more affected women could testify than in the first trial. “Some people who were not prepared to testify in 2020 now seem prepared to do so in 2024,” said Deputy Prosecutor Nicole Blumberg on Wednesday at a hearing in a New York court, at which 72-year-old Weinstein himself was present in a wheelchair, as several US media outlets reported.
The hearing took place at the same time and in the same courthouse in southern Manhattan as the ongoing jury deliberations in the criminal trial against former US President Donald Trump in connection with hush money payments to a porn star. Another hearing in the Weinstein case has been scheduled for July 9.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexual offenses in 2020. At the end of April, an appeals court in New York surprisingly overturned the historic conviction due to procedural errors. Numerous supporters and activists of the
Weinstein remains in custody, however, because he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2023 in another criminal case in Los Angeles that also involved sex crimes. His defense attorneys also want to appeal this verdict. They have until Monday to officially file an appeal.
