(London) Jordan Thompson recorded his second victory against a top 15 player this week by defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-3 on Friday to reach the semi-finals at the Queen’s Club tournament.
The 30-year-old Australian took advantage of unforced errors from Fritz, ranked 12th in the world, in key moments to reach a third final four in a season for the first time in his career.
Thompson, 43rd, started this tournament having not won a match on the ATP circuit since April. He defeated the Dane Holger Rune, 15th, in three rounds, then progressed in the table following the retirement of Andy Murray.
“It’s really nice to qualify for the semi-finals, especially since I’ve had a tough time lately. So I’m happy to turn things around on the turf,” Thompson said on the field.
This will be Thompson’s first career 500 semifinal. He will face the Italian Lorenzo Musetti or the British Billy Harris.
“It shows that if you stick with it long enough, you can keep getting better no matter what age you are,” he said. “I feel like I’m playing better.”
