At a student party at the Louisenlund boarding school, students made racist comments. Last Thursday evening, around 40 young people took part in the celebration, said the head of the boarding school, Peter Rösner.
Eight of them are said to have sung racist slogans to the tune of the more than 20-year-old party hit “L’amour toujours” by Gigi D’Agostino. A teacher from the boarding school then turned off the music and sent the partygoers to bed.
According to Rösner, further discussions were held with some students on Monday to clarify the incident. In a fit of great “stupidity,” they wanted to imitate the video taken on Sylt. They were not aware of the potential consequences. According to the headmaster, they will now be suspended from school for a week.
This week the students should do volunteer work and reflect on their behavior. The school, the teachers and the boarding school educators should also support all students in coming to terms with the situation, it said. The song “L’Amour toujours” will be removed from the school house’s playlist. The boarding school also wants to expand its concept of political education and democracy education.
“It must be clear to all students that it is no joke to sing such slogans,” emphasized Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU). Youthful exuberance or alcohol are no justification for racist chants. Prien fears further imitations: “Young people have always consciously broken social taboos.” It is therefore the task to talk to young people in order to make it clear to them the significance of such songs.
In the run-up to the case at the student party, a racist incident at Pentecost in a posh restaurant on Sylt had already sparked nationwide outrage. In the short video that was shared on social media, young people bawl to Gigi D’Agostino’s song “Foreigners Out” and “Germany for the Germans.”
State security is investigating. In the past few months there have been repeated incidents in which Nazi slogans were shouted to the song – for example in Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. (dpa)
