The Seattle Seahawks chose Rashaad Penny in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. However, after a brief six-season career, the running back has decided to retire at the age of 28. This unexpected news came on Tuesday when the Carolina Panthers placed Penny on the reserve/retired list.

Throughout his time in the NFL, Penny experienced various injuries, but he still managed to accumulate 1,951 rushing yards during his five seasons with the Seahawks and his one season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dave Canales, the new head coach of the Panthers, had worked with Penny during his time on the Seahawks offensive coaching staff. Canales expressed his respect for Penny’s decision, acknowledging the challenges of dealing with injuries as a professional athlete.

In 2021, despite playing in only ten games, Penny had his most productive season, rushing for nearly 750 yards and scoring six touchdowns. Unfortunately, his 2022 season was cut short due to a broken fibula in Week 5. Penny then signed a one-year contract with the Eagles but saw limited action, appearing in just three games.

Transitioning to the Panthers in May, Penny voiced his confidence in his abilities on the field, stating that he believed in himself and knew his capabilities when healthy. He expressed his belief that he could be a top running back in the league when at his best.

Although Penny’s retirement leaves a gap in the Panthers’ running back room, the team still has depth with players like Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders, and rookie Jonathan Brooks on the roster.

As Penny steps away from the NFL, fans and teammates alike reflect on his career and the impact he had on the teams he played for. Despite facing challenges with injuries, Penny’s talent and determination on the field will be remembered by those who watched him play.
