Renton detectives recently made an arrest in Burien that has caught the attention of the community. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Curt Cox from Kent, is known as a prolific car thief. The Renton Police Department released footage of the arrest, showing Cox being handcuffed while a firearm was discovered on the ground nearby.
Following the arrest, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Cox in two separate cases. The first case involved a July 2024 incident of theft of a motor vehicle, while the second case included charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree.
The Renton Police Department reported that Cox was suspected of stealing a truck from Valley Medical Center in Renton back in July. During his arrest, Cox attempted to flee and dropped a loaded stolen gun as well as stolen car keys. It was also discovered that he was in possession of another stolen car at the time.
Court documents revealed that Cox had a bench warrant issued for his arrest in four felony cases after failing to appear for a review hearing in drug court. He has a criminal history that includes 13 convictions related to vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, and other offenses. Additionally, records show that Cox has been arrested 41 times.
Further investigations linked Cox to the theft of a truck from Valley Medical Center and a stolen vehicle from a parking garage in SeaTac. The firearm found during his arrest had been stolen in a separate incident investigated by the Seattle Police Department.
Cox was apprehended by law enforcement in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Burien after attempting to run from the arrest team. He was ordered to surrender and crawl towards the officers before being handcuffed. Prosecutors requested a bail amount of $50,000 for each of the cases filed against Cox, totaling $100,000. However, after considering arguments from both sides, the court set his bail at $75,000.
Cox is scheduled to appear for arraignment at the Maleng Regional Justice Center on November 21. The community will be closely following this case as it unfolds and justice is served.
