A retired Los Angeles County Deputy named Albert Calibet has gone missing in Greece while on vacation. The 59-year-old seasoned hiker was last seen embarking on a four-hour hike to meet a friend for lunch on the island of Amorgos. His family has been frantically trying to locate him since he failed to arrive at his destination on June 11. Despite having dual citizenship in Greece, he has not been in contact with anyone since sending a picture of a trail sign to his sister.
As of June 13, Calibet has been missing for over three days, causing distress among his loved ones. His brother, Oliver Calibet, expressed concern over the lack of water and the urgency of finding him. A team of family members and friends with search and rescue experience have traveled to the island to aid in the search efforts, while others have set up a command center in Hermosa Beach to coordinate with authorities and Calibet’s friend.
The mayor of tourism on Amorgos noted that Calibet has been visiting the island annually for the past ten years and is familiar with the area. However, his disappearance coincides with a severe heatwave in Greece, with extreme temperatures expected to last through June 13. The island of Amorgos, along with the rest of Greece, is facing challenges due to the heatwave, leading to the closure of attractions like the acropolis.
Calibet’s disappearance comes shortly after the tragic death of British TV presenter Michael Mosley, who was found dead in Greece after going missing on a hike. Another missing person case involves a 74-year-old Dutch tourist on the island of Samos. The Hellenic Police, along with volunteers and emergency services, are actively searching for both men, but no updates have been provided as of yet.
The community remains hopeful for Calibet’s safe return, as his loved ones continue to work tirelessly to locate him and bring him back home. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance, coupled with the challenges posed by the heatwave, highlight the importance of safety and preparedness when engaging in outdoor activities, especially in unfamiliar environments.
