A Boeing 737 took off from Düsseldorf to Ankara last Friday. Shortly after takeoff, the pilots noticed problems with the electronics. Screens failed. After 50 minutes, the flight came to an abrupt end.

The relaxing holiday trip turned into a nerve-wracking game – and later a test of patience. A Boeing 737-800 of the Turkish airline Ajet (formerly Anadolujet) had to abort a flight from Düsseldorf to Ankara – and this while already climbing over Cologne!

Flight VF-6 took off as scheduled on Friday (May 31, 2024) at around 6:45 p.m., and the takeoff also went without incident.

But then there were technical problems. At an altitude of about 4,000 meters, the plane flew over the north of Cologne around the districts of Chorweiler and Mülheim. Shortly afterwards, problems with the electronics arose.

Several of the pilot’s displays and screens no longer work, and a system for controlling the engines automatically switched to another mode. The industry service “Aviation Herald” was the first to report this.

The crew was unable to get the problem under control themselves. After several attempts, the pilot decided to abort the flight at an altitude of around 8,500 meters and, after discussing it over the radio, made a sharp U-turn. Flightradar’s recordings confirm this information.

The flight therefore came to an early end. Instead of the almost three and a half hours from Düsseldorf to Ankara, the Boeing touched down on Düsseldorf soil again after around 50 minutes (7:37 p.m.). Before that, the pilot had made two loops over the Ruhr region, then permission to land was given.

The passengers had to leave the plane and wait. It took off again 16 hours later and landed in Turkey almost 17 hours late.

It is not yet known what exactly caused the technical problems. The airline Ajet (a subsidiary of Turkish Airlines) has not yet commented on the incident. The aircraft was examined but is said to still be in use.

Ajet also operates from Cologne/Bonn Airport, and also flies from there to Ankara. It also flies to Sabiha Gökçen, one of Istanbul’s airports.
