Alexandra Paige Moreo and Matthew Alexander Gutierrez’s love story began in the most unexpected of places – on the sidelines of sports games and during long drives to cover reporting assignments. The two met as student reporters at Syracuse University, where they worked together for the student newspaper, The Daily Orange.

Their first date happened in April 2017, but before that, they had already spent a lot of time together on what they now call “unofficial dates.” While covering sports events, they bonded over long drives and got to know each other as colleagues and friends. Ally Moreo, 27, was a photographer and photo editor, and Matthew Gutierrez, also 27, was a reporter and editor for the paper.

Ally recalls being drawn to Matthew’s radiant blue eyes and finding him handsome. She admits that while others around them could tell she was interested, Matthew was oblivious to her feelings until a mutual friend spilled the beans. Once he knew, Matthew started texting her more frequently, and they began to spend more time together, grabbing breakfast after covering morning practices for the football team.

Their first official date took place at Pastabilities, a restaurant in Syracuse, and it was a seamless and natural conversation that flowed effortlessly. There were no awkward moments or attempts to impress each other – just two people enjoying each other’s company.

Their romance blossomed on the sidelines of sports fields and during long drives to reporting assignments, proving that love can truly be found in unexpected places. The shared experiences of working together and getting to know each other in different settings laid the foundation for a strong and lasting relationship between Ally and Matthew.
