Malawi is in mourning after the tragic news of the confirmed death of Vice-President Saulos Chilima in a devastating plane crash. The wreckage of the aircraft, which was carrying Chilima and nine others, was discovered with no survivors, according to President Lazarus Chakwera.
The ill-fated flight took place within the country on Monday morning amid unfavorable weather conditions. Military personnel had been conducting search operations in Chikangawa Forest to locate the missing plane, which had disappeared from airport radars.
During a news briefing, President Chakwera expressed his deep sorrow and condolences to the nation, revealing that the rescue team had located the destroyed aircraft. Chilima, who had served as vice-president for a decade, was en route to attend the burial of a former government minister when the tragedy occurred.
Chakwera praised Chilima as a “good man” and a dedicated vice-president, highlighting their successful alliance during the 2020 elections. The military is currently overseeing the transportation of the victims’ remains to Lilongwe, with funeral arrangements to be announced soon.
Chilima, 51, was a beloved figure in Malawi, especially among the younger population. Despite facing legal troubles in 2022, which were subsequently dropped by the court last month, he remained a prominent political figure in the country.
The late vice-president leaves behind his wife, Mary, and their two children, Sean and Elizabeth. The nation is left to grieve the loss of a respected leader and public servant.
