Few people expect their valuables to be stolen on an airplane. However, one man reports that he was robbed himself and prevented a crime from being committed.

“I was robbed on my flight,” says one man on Reddit. The affected traveler said he was on his way to Hong Kong when he discovered that much of his money and credit cards had been stolen.

According to the Reddit user, the money was taken from his wallet, which he had safely stored in various compartments. In addition, two of his cards had disappeared, and on one of them he discovered a failed transaction for 6,000 HKD (around 700 euros). “I couldn’t believe what had happened,” the man writes. He had “never experienced anything like this before”. He only noticed the theft after landing in Hong Kong and checking into his hotel.

However, when the traveler reported the incident to the airline, they refused to take responsibility. They argued that it was not their job to ensure the safety of passengers’ personal belongings.

The affected passenger reports another theft on his return flight, where he witnessed another passenger being robbed. He observed a woman falling asleep next to him, whereupon the man sitting directly in front of her helped himself to her backpack. This was positioned under his seat.

“When she woke up and checked, I asked her if something was missing. She said she was missing money. I told her that the man in front of her took it,” the traveler claims. The airline would then have taken care of the two of them.

A case in China made headlines as early as 2023. A man has been accused of stealing €21,000 in cash from airline passengers.  A spokesman for Scoot airline confirmed the incident. “Our flight attendants were alerted by a passenger to a suspected theft on the plane and informed airport police,” he said, according to CNN.
