Security Plans Revealed for Republican National Convention – Secret Service Insider Insights
The U.S. Secret Service has unveiled security plans for the upcoming Republican National Convention in July, which will be held in Milwaukee. One significant decision is that a park near the convention site, Pere Marquette Park, will be off-limits to protesters during the event.
Access to Pere Marquette Park will be restricted to individuals with official credentials, such as delegates and journalists, while the convention is taking place. This decision came after intense lobbying by convention organizers. The park’s proximity to the convention arena and the Milwaukee River, as well as its location next to the Milwaukee County Historical Society, raised security concerns, according to Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, an assistant special agent and the Secret Service’s coordinator for the convention.
In addition to Pere Marquette Park, the Secret Service has designated two other parks outside the inner security perimeter for protesters. These parks are located further from the arena but within the outermost security perimeter, where screening checkpoints for vehicles are set up. However, the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin has criticized the size of the security perimeter and the decision to include Pere Marquette Park within it.
Tim Muth, a staff attorney for the A.C.L.U. of Wisconsin, stated that the expansion of the security perimeter was a concession to the Republican National Committee, which aimed to keep demonstrators away from the convention. The A.C.L.U. has filed a lawsuit against the city on behalf of a protest umbrella group, challenging the restrictions imposed on protesters during the convention.
