The Motor City in Detroit is embracing innovation once again, this time with the introduction of cutting-edge autonomous vehicles (AVs) that cater to those in need. May Mobility, a leading company in AV technology, has launched its Accessibili-D program in partnership with the City of Detroit’s Office of Mobility Innovation (OMI) and the Michigan Mobility Collaborative (MMC). This program aims to provide free autonomous shuttle services to Detroit residents aged 62 and older or those living with disabilities.
What makes the Accessibili-D program unique is its focus on improving the lives of those facing mobility challenges. The program offers free rides using three autonomous vehicles, two of which are wheelchair-accessible, with 68 stops covering 11 square miles of downtown Detroit. Operating six days a week, the service connects people to essential services such as healthcare, shopping, employment, and recreational activities.
May Mobility’s AVs are equipped with advanced technology, including the Multi-Policy Decision Making (MPDM) system that provides a 360-degree view using lidar, radar, and cameras. These vehicles undergo extensive testing to ensure safe and efficient navigation in urban environments, making them well-prepared for city driving.
Detroit’s commitment to automotive innovation is evident in the Accessibili-D program, which addresses real community needs. The collaboration between May Mobility, Toyota, and Via, along with community outreach efforts, demonstrates a collective effort to enhance mobility for older residents and those with disabilities.

While the Detroit deployment garners attention, May Mobility’s presence extends beyond the city, with successful deployments in 14 cities across the U.S. and Japan. The company’s mission is to develop AV technology and deploy vehicles to transit agencies, cities, and businesses, offering rides either for free or at costs comparable to public transportation.
