Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., is being considered as a potential running mate for former President Trump. The Army veteran, who served in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been a rising star in Republican politics since endorsing Trump in early January.
In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Cotton mentioned that he regularly speaks with Trump and his team about the campaign and setting him up for success. However, he stated that they have not discussed the vice presidential choice yet.
At 47 years old, Cotton has built a reputation as a conservative hardliner and a small-government Republican during his time in Congress. He is known for being articulate, smart, and right in line with the party’s values. Additionally, his military service and position on the Senate Armed Services Committee give him credibility on foreign policy.
Despite his strengths, there are potential drawbacks to Cotton as a running mate. As a white male from a reliably red state, he may not bring diversity to the Republican ticket. However, Cotton is not the only contender from a state dominated by Republicans.
During a recent visit to New Hampshire to campaign with former Sen. Kelly Ayotte, Cotton expressed his commitment to serving the people of Arkansas and the nation. He cited family considerations as the main reason for not running for the White House in 2024, emphasizing the importance of being present for his young children.
Looking ahead, Cotton has not ruled out a future presidential bid in 2028 or beyond. While he closed the chapter on a national race in 2024, he and his wife are keeping the possibility open for the future.
As the speculation about Cotton’s potential role as Trump’s running mate continues, it remains to be seen who will ultimately be chosen for the position. Stay tuned for updates on the 2024 campaign trail and exclusive interviews on Fox News Digital’s election hub.
