Shannon Sharpe, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, recently shared why he decided to stop sleeping at women’s homes early in his professional football career. During an interview on the “Funky Friday” podcast with former NFL quarterback Cam Newton, Sharpe recounted two incidents that made him change his ways.

The first incident occurred right after he was selected by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the draft. Sharpe returned to Georgia and called a woman to ask if he could sleep over at her place. However, things took an unexpected turn when he heard arguing and a man stormed into the room. To his surprise, the man turned out to be a fan who admired Sharpe’s football skills and had no issue with him.

Despite this experience, Sharpe did not learn his lesson. In 1993, during a bye week for the Broncos, he went back to Savannah State for homecoming and encountered another dangerous situation when a man entered the room with a gun. Fortunately, the man recognized Sharpe and returned his jewelry that he had left behind.

These incidents made Sharpe realize the risks of sleeping at women’s homes, and he vowed never to do so again. He emphasized that he has not closed his eyes at another woman’s house in 31 years.

Sharpe had a successful football career, winning three Super Bowls and being selected to the Pro Bowl eight times. He played 12 years for the Broncos and two more years with the Baltimore Ravens.

Through these anecdotes, Sharpe’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of being cautious and aware of potential risks, even in seemingly harmless situations. It highlights the unpredictable nature of life and the significance of learning from past experiences to avoid dangerous encounters.
