Two women have been friends for 25 years. Then one of them gets divorced and the other suddenly and abruptly ends the relationship because she is afraid for her husband.
Friendships break up for all sorts of reasons: people argue violently, they slowly drift apart and nobody knows exactly why. One woman sent her best friend Lucy into the desert because she was afraid for her husband. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, told her story to the Daily Mail.
For 25 years, the two hung out together, meeting every two weeks and exchanging news, secrets and gossip every day.
But then Lucy got divorced. “As her best friend, I was ready to give her endless emotional support and comfort her in late-night phone calls,” the woman told the Daily Mail. Her husband also offered to help Lucy, who was now single, and supported her in moving into a new house.
Lucy had changed. She had become the sexy, man-crazy party girl she used to be and her friend distanced herself from her out of fear for her husband. “When Lucy told me about her dating escapades and her exciting new social life, I was afraid that Marc would hear these stories and examine me and our marriage and come to the conclusion that we should both be more sociable and carefree like her. While Lucy went to the hairdresser once a week, I was busy with play dates, parties and playgroups.”
The woman began ignoring Lucy’s messages and making excuses when she wanted to go out, cutting her former best friend out of her life completely.
A year later, she met her again by chance. “Lucy asked why. I said our lives had developed so differently and so had our interests. We promised to stay in touch. But that didn’t happen.”
