Singapore Leads South-East Asian Private Equity Market Amid Regional Decline: Bain Report
Singapore has emerged as the dominant player in a subdued South-east Asian private equity market in 2023, according to the latest findings from global management consultancy Bain & Company. Despite a decline in overall activity in the region, Singapore secured a significant portion of capital investment in non-publicly traded companies.
The Republic secured a total of US$3.7 billion out of the US$9 billion invested in the region, accounting for 62 out of 109 deals. However, both Singapore and the broader South-east Asian region experienced a drop in private equity deal value, with Singapore witnessing a 50% decrease from the previous year.
Mr. Suvir Varma, an advisory partner at Bain, highlighted concerns among investors regarding the macroeconomic outlook, including factors such as high interest rates, upcoming elections, and China’s impact on the region. This uncertainty has led investors to seek more clarity before committing capital.
The decline in private equity activity in South-east Asia mirrors a similar trend in the broader Asia-Pacific region, with varying degrees of decreases in deal value across different countries. Despite these challenges, there remains optimism for future opportunities in sectors such as healthcare and financial technology.
Looking ahead, experts suggest that efforts are needed to revive deal activity in the region, with a focus on operational improvements in PE-owned assets and the development of stock exchanges. In Singapore specifically, sectors like healthcare, education, fintech, artificial intelligence, and precision engineering are becoming increasingly attractive to investors.
In conclusion, while the private equity market in South-east Asia faces challenges, there are opportunities for growth and investment in key sectors. With the right strategies and a focus on operational improvements, the region can attract more capital and drive economic growth.
