A 70-year-old man from the USA is said to have killed an 18-year-old student during his time as a soldier in Lower Franconia. The investigation was unsuccessful for a long time – until new technology came along.

A 70-year-old man from the USA has been extradited to Germany on suspicion of murder. The Schweinfurt public prosecutor’s office assumes that the former US soldier killed an 18-year-old student with 14 knife stabs in 1978. A trial against the man at the Schweinfurt regional court is not expected before autumn, the public prosecutor’s office announced on Friday. The man was picked up by Schweinfurt police officers in the USA and taken into custody after his arrival in Germany.

The 70-year-old was arrested in June last year in the US state of Nebraska. He is said to have been stationed in Lower Franconia as a soldier in the US armed forces in 1978. Suspicions against him have existed for years. Only recently, however, thanks to new DNA technology, was it possible to prove his guilt with sufficient certainty.

The suspect first came to the attention of investigators in 1996. He was 24 years old at the time of the crime and is said to have been in a relationship with the victim. In his earlier interrogations he had always denied the crime. The man is said to have later confessed to the crime to his wife in the USA.
